The Hungry Guppies Singapore Go to Lagnaa
I once likened Lagnaa Restaurant (6 Upper Dickson Road in Little India) to a whorehouse.
When I feel the need to succumb to the lust of the flesh, I just go there, where my ‘mamasan’ Kumari and ‘papasan’ Kesavan will welcome me warmly and introduce the newbies on the list. But I will always go for my two favourite whores: Threadfin Fish Curry and Chicken Tikka. They never fail to leave me totally satisfied. Usually I will call for the ‘services’ of the Cranberry Naan or Yogurt Rice as accompaniments and they are only too eager to please. If stamina allows, I will finish off the experience with the Chocolate Shimizu or Masala Tea…Mmm.
Oh lately, I found a new muse there – the Spicy Honey Wings. This hot chick makes you want to just break into song, poetry or sweat. She makes Ikea wings look almost saintly.
After the encounter, you wonder if you ever need a partner when you can have a truly org…. gastronomic experience with about S$20+ per person.
Lagnaa has an interesting concept of Barefoot Dining on the second level of their conserved shophouse, where you dine seated on cushions on the floor over a low table. So you can practically stretch out your legs (no need too wide), let your hair down and savour their drool-worthy delights. The experience of dining over a small table makes the whole experience intimate and relaxed. You will also notice the ingenuity of using specially designed serving dishes mounted on a lazy suzie to hold all the food you need in a small area on the table. The owner Kesavan made an uncanny discovery when my Korean clients mentioned that the serving style looks exactly like that used in the Korean palaces in a bygone era.
The decor is minimalist, a little quiet meditative haven in the midst of busy Little India, where the music lulls you into a peaceful stupor, and at least one couple has fallen in love all over again right here, after countless years of marriage. It’s stated on the graffiti wall on Level 1 which has spilled over uncontrollably to the pillars and ceilings outside the shop. But watch out, though. I know of another guy, who on his second date, had eyes only for the food and forgot who he dated that day. I had to remind him I was the one who brought him there when he was describing how wonderful the restaurant and food was on one of our later dates. Sigh.
And now for the food which stole the man’s heart…You can actually indulge without feeling guilty. The food is cooked using fresh natural ingredients with minimal oil. You should try their Roti Prata which is cooked in the tandoor and hence dispenses with the need to be drenched in oil. And if I may tell you more about the subject of my hallucinations in the middle of the work day, that will be the Chicken Tikka. I actually smelt its aroma while staring at my computer and had to go off early to satiate my senses. And the reason for it being so desirable is that it is cooked fresh in the tandoor, not reheated, and is therefore warm and moist, bathed with spice and made tender by their secret process. Drizzle freshly squeezed lime over it, take a bite and you will totally understand why your date fails to notice you exist.
Also, the reason why you find so many expats and tourists there is because you can choose your spice level from Levels 1 to 6. And this little piece of good news has spread by word of mouth within the community in Singapore and through French travel guide books such as Routa.
And the hottest items at Lagnaa? That’s got to be Kesavan and Kumari, whose superb and prompt service has made customers become their friends.
