The Hungry Guppies Singapore Go to Mooi Chin Palace Restaurant

3 of the Hungry Guppies happened to be around Bugis area when Papa Guppy decided to treat the other 2 guppies, Gobbling Guppy and Sweet-Toothed guppy (myself) to lunch at Mooi Chin Place at Golden Landmark Hotel.

Unknown to me, Mooi Chin Place is famous for some award-winning dishes and Papa Guppy insisted on us trying its signature Hainanese Pork Chop.

Disclaimer: I am no pork lover because of its “meaty” taste and its smell. I simply steer clear of pork dishes such as ba ku teh (herbal pork soup) and charsiew rice.. the likes.

So naturally, I was not very keen to embark on this guppies outing but since it’s a treat and no one turns down a treat, especially in such bad times. I tagged along quite willingly.

Yet, the Hainanese Pork Chop turned out to be superb, marvelously yummilicious! Even for a pork-hater like me. The pork chop was thinly sliced and fried skillfully such that it didn’t not taste sinfully oily and also retains the chewy texture of the “odour-less” meat. The gravy which came generously smeared on the pork shop was also just right, not too light or bland, nor was it too heavy and strong. The plus point of the gravy is that it goes well with my white rice as well.

The guppies did enjoy a vegetable dish at Mooi Chin Place as well but that was not too much of a highlight.

The service at the restaurant in satisfactory but frankly speaking, I was too busy stuffing myself with the slices of pork chop (while trying really hard to eat elegantly at the same time) to really even notice.

What other guppies say:

elaine-2Gobbling Guppy says: The atmosphere is quite nostalgic, the Hainanese pork chop, which is supposed to be their signature dish, is nice and crisp and fragrant. The vegetable dish was all right, pretty good. Overall, the food served is decent. I guess I am looking for that something more in the dining experience and that is lacking…but I got some nostalgia :)

drtathon-21Papa Guppy says: “Mooi Chin brings back memories. I remember checking out the restaurant a number of years ago when I was looking for a restaurant for my mum’s birthday celebration. Now that my mum has passed on, everytime I pass by this restaurant, I would think of her. We did not have the pork chop for the birthday dinner then but it is well known that it is one of the signature dishes here, so it was a must have when I brought the other 2 beautiful but hungry guppies here for lunch. Am glad it didn’t disappoint :-)”
