The Hungry Guppies Singapore Go to Quiznos
For a period of time, I got addicted to these subs at 49 Pekin Street #01-01 Far East Square.
But what really fascinates me is how smart the entire system works. The meats for the subs are freshly cooked. Then the bread with meat and cheese is put through a conveyor belt toaster so it is placed under heat for a specific length of time without disruption to the process flow. At the other end, the sandwich makers would put the appropriate vegetables, cold cuts (if needed in recipe) and dressing, then the sandwiches are wrapped in paper and placed on a tray with any side orders like soups or salads. You then help yourself to the jalapenos and pickles and additional sauces if required…I don’t know why but the whole hectic process and controlled process reminds me of how my nephews are put through the shower, dressed and whisked out to school every morning. They help themselves into their socks and shoes btw.
Now the tray is pretty ingenious. It is oval with a handle, kind of like the letter Q in Quiznos. It is light and easy to handle and there isn’t much grease to wash since you eat holding on to the paper wrappr of the sub.
I also like the designed sandwiches complete with a variety of cheeses used. They leave no chance to lousy cooks like me to wreck the sandwich through my own choice of vegetables and dressings. Then there is the fabulous bread which is truly “zhen cai shi liao” or Chinese for “the real stuff”. The wheat bread is dense and brownish, which I will take to mean really ‘wheatish’, the parmesan bread actually has visible parmesan on it and at least you can taste and smell the aroma. The Zesty Beef sandwich seems to be the favourite though the others are not too bad.
The best thing about eating here is the happy staff. It’s pretty obvious there has been some customer service training done when the staff thank each other a little too profusely and actually giggle and have fun when they realise how silly it was rather than do it in a dreaded manner. Even the staff who clears trays brighten your day with “enjoy your meal” when they see you.
Best thing is Tully’s is just next door and under the same Far East establishment so you can have a good coffee accompaniment with your sandwich. They use Ghirardelli chocolate for their mocha, a good selling point, but I am so used to the less sweet version from Starbucks. Their latte is what I usually go for.
Now I must not neglect to tell you about the cookie. There is adequate tensile strength (read “chewiness”) which sets it apart from that other major sub restaurant. I found the regular chocolate cookie too sweet though. But I remembered the double chocolate chip which made me a convert. While I’m at it, I must rave a little about their cakes. I have tried the strawberry and chocolate cakes at the recommendation of a friend and the sponge is really soft, not too sweet, and the chocolate used for the fudge seems to be of the better quality with a good rich aroma and smoothness.
I have not yet weaned off my addiction.

What other guppies say:
Health Freak Guppy says: ” Love it! Anything sandwichy and deli-ish is my style. The first time I was there, I ordered a foot long Honey Mustard. Suffice to say it was so good, Gobbling Guppy and Sweeth Teeth Guppy was surprised at how fast I finished it!! And may be wrong, but don’t think this meal will do too much damage to my calorie count.”

My favourite sandwich from Quiznos would be the classic Italian. Yummy salami, my favourite.. and the wheat bread… is heavenly! Definitely value for money I say! Oh did I mention the that the service staff were all very friendly and warm… just like their toasted sandwiches!”
