The Hungry Guppies Attack Ampang Yong Tau Fu
The hungry guppies had a most fulfilling lunch today. Drawn by its good reputation, we swarmed to Fu Lin TouFu Yuen to get some Ampang Yong Tau Fu.
The winning formula of this Ampang Yong Tau Fu is definitely its tasty gravy and the nicely-fried side dishes consisting of brinjal with fish paste, bean curd, bean curd skin, lady’s finger with fish paste and more. I am so glad that I managed to have such nice food which tasted more like well-prepared home-cooked food and not just your usual greasy hawker fare covered with all sorts of artificial flavour enhancers.

In fact, the rest of the guppies commented that I was really quiet throughout lunch. That was only because I was pretty much at bliss and satisfied with just ingesting my
food.
The folks at Shenton Way should be thankful for such an eating option!

What other guppies say:
Papa Guppy says: “In 1983, I went to the REAL Ampang Yong Tau Fu near KL in Malaysia. My my …. It left such an impression on me that I’ve been searching for it ever since …This is quite close, especially the fried brinjal with fish paste … not quite the same shape, colour or taste, but it had the same effect – it brought out wide smiles on the faces of my eating companions…. Maybe I should really give up on this 25 year search for the 1983 Ampang Yong Tau Fu and learn to love this one ….

Sweet-toothed Guppy says: “This is a very delightful lunch. I was not very hungry but being a guppy, I succumbed to my greed and ate quite a bit of the other guppies’ share. Very tasty gravy and accompanying side dishes I must say. This is the second time I am eating from Fu Lin Tou Fu Yuen. The first time when I had my dinner there in the evening, their business for the day was so good, almost all of the food for the side dishes were sold out! Now, I know the reason behind it. The side dishes are simply so delicious, the lunch crowd had made sure not much was left over for the dinner crowd. Oh and the gravy… has a tinge of Japanese teriyaki sauce sweetness which complements the noodles all too perfectly”

…
Da-Bao Guppy (Take-aways Guppy) says: “I would definitely not hesitate to pack the Yong Tau Fu to bring home for my family. Love the minced pork and the superb gravy. I especially like the thick rice noodles. Recently, I have not been having a good appetite but this Yong Tau Fu really was too good to resist.

..
Angel Guppy says: “I have never been a picky eater but I must say that this Yong Tau Fu is really not too bad, maybe even a little above the average. It’s worth a try I say!”

..
Grumpy Guppy says: “Gosh! It’s delicious. I am smiling. Not so grumpy already.”

..
Sommelier Guppy says: “I can go into 5 pages worth of analysis on why this Yong Tau Fu is heavenly. I shall however, just state 3 important success factors of it:
1) The gravy which is just of the right texture and flavour. It was not too heavy and sticky, neither was it bland and watery. Getting this right requires experience and skill I must say.
2) The thick rice noodles is smooth and glides down the throat easily
3) The ingredients are fried just the right way.

Travelbug Guppy says: “Ampang refers to suburb of Kuala Lumpur, partly located in the state of Selangor, Malaysia. Tau Fu refers to bean curd, this dish is usually serve with noodles. Ampang Yong Tau Fu is a Malaysian Chinese soup dish with Hakka origins commonly found in Singapore and Malaysia.
This dish is recommended to travellers who will like to experience Singapore/ Malaysia culture while getting a gastronomical delight. Personally, I do enjoy this Ampang Yong Tau Fu from this particular eatery. It has a unique taste that I have not quite tasted else where and it’s certainly worth deviating slightly from the nearby heritage attraction, Chinatown.”
