The Hungry Guppies Attack Lee Fun Nam Kee Chicken Rice & Restaurant

A group of six hungry guppies went hunting for good chicken rice the other day. Gobbling Guppy was already trembling with hunger and Grumpy Guppy, was as usual what else, grumpy.

We swam quickly to the nearest good chicken rice place that we know of, Lee Fun Nam Kee Chicken Rice at Toa Payoh Lorong 4.

The place was as usual packed with Chicken Rice devotees. Can see some familiar faces who are there tucking away the good food after attending Sunday church services. It’s funny how there is a always a good chicken rice shop near the churches I attend. From the Tian Tian chicken rice at Maxwell Food Centre to the Margaret Drive chicken rice and now this Lee Fun Nam Kee Chicken Rice in Toa Payoh :-)

The place is more like a HDB restaurant than a stall or kopitiam. Big, spacious and with service staff who brought us our order fast and furious.

Gobbling Guppy who was up till then making lots of hungry noises suddenly went quiet, and when that happens, we know good food is around and Gobbling Guppy is too focused on gobbling up the food to make small talk anymore.

I usually prefer the more popular ‘White Chicken’ but this ‘Brown Chicken’ ( Soya Sauce Chicken ) here made me change my mind. Tender, juicy but not too fat, I couldn’t help  myself and just had to have more than my usual allowance of chicken skin. The accompanying soya sauce gravy was so fragrant that I didn’t mind too much that the chicken rice’s natural flavour was overwhelmed by the gravy. I must say that this soya sauce chicken is really one of the best that I’ve had, maybe even better than the 2 famous soya sauce chicken shops at Cross Street ( maybe one day, we will organize a direct Face-off between these 2 famous soya sauce chicken :- ) )

The place was comfortable and airy, an important consideration when you have kiddies with you. Service was snappy and the food came quite quickly. Will definitely come back here often … especially when I have my kiddies with me.

What other guppies say:

elaine-24Gobbling Guppy says: “At first sight, the soya sauce chicken looks gloriously good, glistening with sauce. The chicken was tender, the sauce was fragrant with a nice toasty caramel taste from possibly some sugar that was added and browned. Accompanied by fluffy, light and fragrant rice and good chilli, it was a satisfying meal…until you start to eat too much chicken and the sweetness of the sauce starts getting to you. So the trick is to not overdose on the saucy chicken…but it’s a bit hard when the chicken beckons you ever so tenderly.”

teeyenchew-21Grumpy Guppy says: “The chicken was tender and smooth, and it tasted delicious with the soya sauce initially.  But, after a few mouthfuls, all I could taste was the sweetness of the sauce, which was a bit overwhelming.”

janicekhoo-24Chilli-Padi Guppy says: “The accompanying chilli here, though not the most powerful that I have had before, was good enough as the succulent chicken and flavourful gravy more than make up for the lack of ‘oomp’ in the chilli.”

missy-guppyMissy Guppy says: “If I take anything less than 2 hours to finish a meal, it must be a good one. This time, I really had to, Gobbling Guppy and Give-me-rice Guppy were attacking the food so ferociously that I had no choice but to fight for it as well. I will definitely ask PaPa Guppy to bring me here again.”
